As an OT, I talk about these things in my practice but it's often not taken seriously regarding how much food impacts coping skills and mental health, as well as physical health. Guidelines and recommendations are very good reference points, but that does not mean they apply to all babies. We’re strong advocates for parents taking the lead role in their child's health.
Holistic baby-led weaning is more of a philosophy rather than a strict set of rules. You have the freedom to adapt the approach to suit your baby's individual needs and your family's lifestyle. Ultimately, this course is meant to serve as a resource to guide and inspire, and you are encouraged to lean into your intuition to determine what is best for your baby.
We also recognize that every child is different, and some children have specific nutritional needs based on their health history, growth/development, and/or specific medical conditions. For these children, it is important to also consult with a trusted health care professional to ensure the baby's specific nutritional requirements are being met. Dr. Alyssa is a pharmacist and is trained to understand different conditions and disease states, how they develop, and how medications can be used to manage and/or treat them. During professional training, she studied the role of food in specific health conditions and its function in health promotion and disease prevention. This paved the way for a deeper understanding and appreciation of how we can use food as medicine.
